What Reality TV Stars and You-Tubers Can Teach Us About Kindness

‘We hate it when our friends become successful’ sang Morrissey way back when (a musical reference that most modern day zeitgeisters won’t get) and it’s a known fact that as humans we are hard wired to feel envy and to want to bring others down to our own level.

Recent research from a German university found that one in three people visiting Facebook felt miserable and jealous after visiting friends pages because other’s happy pictures trigger feelings of envy. Sometimes social networking doesn’t feel very ‘social’ at all.

Theodore Roosevelt once said “Comparison is the thief of joy.”

I’ve been hugely impressed to see how the ‘new rock stars’ are breaking down these barriers.  If you have anyone in your family under the age of 25, chances are they are fans of one or more You-Tubers. These self-confessed ‘amateurs’ have come up with an idea, started making videos and transformed their lives – often off the stratosphere with followers and fans. I’m not complaining – for the first time in years I have been heralded a ‘cool mum’ not because I can arrange a ticket to a Paul McCartney gig or get a signed copy of an Adele album, but because I have interviewed and facilitated my twelve-year-old son to meet… wait for it… Marcus Butler…(who?) oh and Thatcher Joe, Casper Lee and US YouTube sensation Tyler Oakley.  Alfie, one of the first to become hugely successful not just with his YouTube channel but with his book Pointless (it actually was) caused a furore in Central London when he invited his fans (via Instagram, Snapchat et al) to come to a meet-up and signing of his new book at Waterstones in Piccadilly.  The usually fairly busyness of a Saturday side street in Covent Garden was maxed out five hours before the event and thousands (including two of my disappointed teenagers) had to be turned away as they closed off the street.  ‘I will sign everyone’s book’ Alfie had promised…err no, instead of the 1400 people one might expect for – say a David Beckham book signing – eight thousand kids had rocked up desperate for a glimpse of the unlikely star who made videos in his bedroom.

But here’s the thing with this bunch of You-Tubers, despite now being millionaires and key influencers, they are all friends, actual besties – not just ‘oh we meet at star studded parties and ‘mmoi’ kiss on the cheek’… no they are BFF’s, they do shows and meet-ups together, appear on each other’s videos and support each other’s products.

We recently interviewed Louise Pentland, better known as ‘Sprinkle of Glitter’ she is a little newer to the game with only around eleven million subscribers as oppose to the hugely well-known teenage girl crush Zoella who has twenty two million, yet when we asked her, are you similar to Zoella? Are you her competitor?, her answer was wide eyed and from the heart. ‘Zoella is my friend’ she said, ‘we are all friends, it’s a bit like a family, you have to remember, success is good for us all, – ‘All ships rise in high tide’

Louise-Pentland

What a statement, and how true!  Far from being freaked out that someone else’s book on fly fishing has become a best seller, you should be rejoicing that there’s clearly a hungry audience for when yours comes along.

Vicky Pattison

I also got to meet reality TV star Vicky Pattison from Geordie Shores, she is truly down to earth and totally deserved to win her title of Queen of the Jungle in ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’. She admitted that while most celebs went into the experience feeling scared and determined to ‘play the game’ to manipulate themselves to the top, she got herself totally prepped and went in genuinely just excited to have such a unique experience. It came as somewhat a shock to her to find herself playing the role of peacemaker, but play it she did, diffusing all kinds of potentially explosive situations even with the much salted ‘Lady C’. Vicky came into Radio 2 to talk about her new book The Real Me, and instead of it being what one might expect, a tutorial on eyelashes, nail designs and the best chat up lines, she has weaved in some important messages. She told us the most important thing she wants to get across to young girls is; ’It’s important to be nice’. She continued to say that she believed that being jealous of someone else doesn’t help your success, in fact the opposite it true and we should focus on being kind’ and supportive of each other.

Since I started coaching clients the question I hear over and over again is ‘Am I good enough?’ ‘Can I really compete?’ People who want to write a book or get their book or course out there to a wider audience often tell me they are fearful that the market for what they write about is already overcrowded…‘there are already so many books on my subject’…they lament…’Will anyone be interested in mine?’

Of course my answer is always the same, there may be many books on your topic but there’s only one YOU’ – That’s why it’s critical to really know your YOU-sp (USP) – what it is that makes you YOU-niquely different.

Having said that I’m not immune either to the odd ‘wobble’ about my credentials. Recently I was thinking about planning an event around helping people with their public speaking skills, helping experts and entrepreneurs become the Go-To expert in their field and how to attract opportunities and maximise them.

Just as I was about to start looking at venues I saw some advertising for an event not dissimilar to the one I was planning – except that this entrepreneur had hired a huge venue and seemed to be totally rocking and at the top of her game in that arena. What did I do? Panic! – I went through all those same concerns and fears, am I really good enough, could I ever fill out a big conference venue?

Never compare your beginning to someone else’s middle’

I must admit I really did feel as though the wind had been taken out of my sails, it took a session with a great inspirational coach (we all need someone a few steps ahead of us) to make me realise that my experience and message is not the same as my ‘competitor’ and what I share with my audience is different. And just as I remind my clients, I too have my own skills, talents and specific USP – for starter’s I’ve had twenty five years in the media – on both sides of the microphone!

So I calmed down and recognised that by simply comparing myself unfavorably to someone else who seemed to be ahead of me, I was procrastinating, holding myself back from just getting on with sharing my YOU-nique brilliance – I was allowing all the negative inner talk to take over.

Of course it’s good to check out the competition, absolutely Google around and see what others are doing in your field, it also doesn’t make much sense to host your event the same weekend as a competitor if the target audience may be similar, but don’t get obsessed by what others are doing, there will always be people ahead of us (thank goodness – they can pave the way and help us) and there will always be those coming up behind. And perhaps with our unique skills talents and clear definable ‘USP’ we can assist some of those newbies, the ones who are our ideal clients.

That’s the key really, there’s only one YOU and you are the right person for the right ‘tribe’ or ‘community’. Other experts, brand owners and teachers will be the right person for another community. Ultimately it’s a big old ocean and there’s room for lots of ripples, so go ahead and make your waves! Oh and remember to encourage even the waves that roll in stronger than yours, kindness is good for you.

INTERVIEW: Janey – Imperfectly Natural Woman at The Global Woman Summit

DSC_6820

Interview with Mirela Sula of Global Woman Summit

Janey began her career by singing backing vocals for George Michael, Kim Wilde and Boy George and her own chart success came in the summer of 1991 when she teamed up with Saint Etienne and local keyboardist Andrew Midgeley. Since 1999, she has been heard on the BBC Radio 2 Steve Wright in the Afternoon show with her “factoids”, views and tips, and she often sits in for his Sunday morning love songs programme. Here is her inspiring story as a successful mother of four children, her great career as an artist, BBC Radio 2 presenter and broadcaster, and as an entrepreneur with her passion for being an “imperfectly natural” businesswoman.

You are an artist and active woman in many areas – what drives you toward success?

I have always been ambitious but unsure where that came from as my parents weren’t. I asked to join the Sunday school when I was 4 years old as I heard they gave you sweets if you sang well – a born show off! What drives me now is wanting to share my passion and enthusiasm for holistic living and for increasing exposure for heart centred businesses and individuals.

How did you start your journey to become who you are today?…

I started as a backing singer for lots of mainstream bands, including Wham and George Michael, Kim Wilde and Mari Wilson and I had my own hit “7 ways to love” with Cola Boy, which reached number 7 in the chart in 1991. This was around the same time that I got into radio presenting and production. When I had my first baby in 1998 I recognised the importance of holistic living and sustainability. I talked about this a lot on air (BBC Radio 2) and a publisher came to me and offered me a book deal, leading to my first book “Imperfectly Natural Woman” which came out in 2005 and was a number one Amazon best seller.

Who has supported you to achieve your dreams?…

The Taymount Clinic is expanding rapidly, and as such, the UK has an opening for a number of Nutritional Therapists at their new location in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire.

Read more about The Taymount Clinic:

The Taymount Clinic, Hertfordshire, UK, is known worldwide as a specialist centre for providing Faecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT) procedures for the replacement of good and healthy intestinal bacteria in situations where unbalanced gut bacteria are thought to play a significant part.  FMT is the re-stocking of gut bacteria from a health and disease-free source, to create what is described as more normal, healthier bacterial levels.  Faecal Microbiota Transplants are rapidly becoming the preferred treatment for many gut related diseases and chronic conditions. The clinic provides FMT treatment to normalise gut bacteria in patients with Clostridium difficile infection and have also replaced gut bacteria in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis, post-antibiotic Dysbiosis and food intolerance cases.

However, it is not always about a specific disease condition or a known diagnosed illness.  All around us, we are witness to an increasing number of people who do not have a formal diagnosis but who have a general feeling of bloating, sluggishness and general gut issues which are not directly related to a specific illness, but more to lifestyle factors including stress, post-holiday illness, antibiotic treatments, and today’s chaotic lifestyles and eating habits.

Writing A Book – Your Calling Card

If you’ve heard me speak you will know one of my strategic 4 ‘C’s is Content Creation (the others are Clarity, Confidence and Connections) and in addition to encouraging experts, entrepreneurs and small business owners to create great informative content to connect with their potential clients and customers, I also talk about the fact that writing a book in order to share your message and promote your work can be a brilliant calling card.

I usually give the example of working in a newsroom or TV production office where when an expert is needed to comment on a specific topic, if no-one immediately springs to mind they would then start googling authors who have written on the subject – the assumption is that if you have written a book you are an expert on the topic.

Add three letters to the word Author and you become an Authority…

AUTHOR + ITY = Authority

Sometimes in order to get you going all you need is some encouragement and support. I’m thrilled that one of our sponsors in the Platinum Awards is AuthorCraft, a network founded by Chris Day, which is very much about supporting writers whether they self-publish or are with a mainstream publishing company.

LOGO AC

AuthorCraft is the professional network for authors and is a member of the National Association of Writers Groups. At its monthly meetings in the Institute of Directors, London, it recognises the achievements of its members by holding book launches and provides independent and impartial advice on all aspects of origination, production, publishing, marketing and social media.

Chris Day gives his top tips for would be authors ….

  1. Don’t start writing until you have complete clarity of who you are writing for – and what benefit they will get from your book.
  2. Be clear as to what potential readers are searching for online – for which your book has the answer. What key words will your book need to have for it to be found in these searches?
  3. Always work with a writing coach or an editor to help bring out the best in you – and get your manuscript well-polished and ‘oven-ready’.
  4. Never do your own proof reading or rely on a relative who was once a teacher. Proofreading is a professional job, don’t cut corners or spend the rest of your life apologising for typos!
  5. Unless you’re a qualified designer, don’t design you own book cover. People can spot a ‘self-published book’ from two streets away. A professional design is essential.
  6. The most important thing on your book cover is not the picture, but the heading, the title and the strapline. These three need to tell an unambiguous story.
  7. Choose your book category with care. Look at other books similar to yours and see what categories they are in. If you’re after the same readers, be where they are looking!
  8. Never fill you garage with boxes of books. These days you don’t need to as you can print to order. But buy well. For your book to make you a profit the raw print price has to be below 20% of the cover price. You just need to shop around.
  9. A book publicist is a great investment. Their personal contacts in the media will get you coverage that no general press release will ever achieve (ahem …Janey Lee Grace?)
  10. Every new book is a start-up business and needs to be treated just like any other new business. Your business start-up costs need to be spread over your first year. Make sure you make a profit from every book you sell.
  11. Become known on social media as a go-to expert in your field. You would not believe the difference to your standing in the marketplace that becoming a published author will achieve.

Contact AuthorCraft and attend one their monthly meetings, first time visitors can attend for free.  www.authorcraft.co.uk

Do You Have Grit?

We interviewed a fascinating woman on the Steve Wright show recently, Dr Angela Duckworth is an American psychologist and public speaker who gave a highly acclaimed TED talk which has been viewed over 8 million times.

DrAngelaLeeDuckworthPhoto_RyanLashTED2

Her new book is called ‘Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance’ which looks at why people with talent can sometimes fail to make it while other less talented people can achieve amazing things.

It comes down to grit, determination and passion and she says people with grit are often very stubborn, they don’t give up easily.  There is of course a theory that says many hours are needed to become an expert at anything, but Angela believes it’s not only about working hard, it’s also important to have hope, passion, effort and prioritisation.

Angela sites examples of those with true grit, The Queen, Tom Daley, Sir Richard Branson, and Leicester Football Club. When it comes to the latter, I found it interesting to read that the manager Claudio Raniari, in addition to working the team hard and instilling a great team spirit, also ensured that they had fun, that they felt inspired and hopeful. It worked in their case!

So the question to ask yourself is, do you have grit? Do you have what it takes to stay the course, be willing to pick yourself up and start again if at first you don’t succeed…are you willing to try and try again?

My two penneth to add to Angela’s thesis is that you do need absolute clarity on what you want at any one time, undoubtedly Leicester City were focused on that Premiership title.  Richard Branson will give his ultimate commitment and focus to whatever his current project and goal.

So ask yourself, what do you really want? Start with one big goal or dream, and be realistic about the steps you need to begin to make that happen, then ask yourself if you really have the passion and the perseverance to see it through.

If you know what you want, you know you have the skills and talent needed, it’s authentically you, you have the grit, determination, passion and perseverance, then the one big question left is – Have you made a start?

Remember the saying…you don’t have to get it right; you do have to get it going

‘Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance’ is published by Vermilion.

Spotlight Interview: Shann Nix Jones

secrets-from-chuckling-goat_Shann-Nix-Jones

In my UK Health Radio ‘Spotlight Show’ I interview some of the world’s most inspiring self-development coaches, gurus and personalities about their health and wellbeing services, products and knowledge.

In this previous interview I spoke with Shann Nix Jones the author of the Amazon bestseller book – Secrets from Chuckling Goat

Shann Jones never expected to fall in love with a Welsh farmer at the age of 41. She didn’t anticipate leaving her city girl existence as a radio talk show host in San Francisco to end up as the mistress of a 25-acre self-sustaining farm in Wales. And she certainly didn’t expect to find herself locked in a battle to save her husband’s life from a deadly superbug infection, armed only with natural remedies and the live culture drink they make on the farm.

Secrets from Chuckling Goat is a true story, taken from Shann’s diaries. It’s about second-chance love stories, and happy endings that pop up when you least expect them. It’s a story about nature, and farm life, and ancient recipes. And most of all, it’s about the miracles that can happen when you refuse to give up hope.
