Worried about your kids education? And are you in your element?

Spoiler alert!!!!  If you don’t have school age children, you might still be inspired by this post!

As the kids start back for the summer term, there will be parents everywhere feeling exhausted by the motivating their children back into their uniforms and out the door, not to mention concerns about homework and testing. How important is education to our health and well being?  Hugely –  I’m sure you would agree, but why is trying to determine the right education for our children or supporting decisions made for our grandchildren so stressful for so many? How do you feel about your own education and do you ever feel that your creativity is help back by having the ‘wrong’ education? I loved the line in The Durrells (my all time fave TV show) where Mrs Durrell is worrying about Gerry’s schooling  (or lack of it) her wise guest tells her…My mother always knew there is a fine line between formal education and ‘fannying about’

As someone who has been through this and is to a certain extent still living with this stress – we have two school age children, one who doesn’t fit the mould and recently gave a TEDX talk on What’s wrong with the current education system(click to watch) …I am inspired by Sir Ken Robinson, we were lucky enough to interview him on Radio 2 recently on his new book You, your child and school.- Navigate your way to the best education.

Ken has balanced various roles: as a teacher, writer, researcher, adviser and speaker and has directed and been involved in many initiatives around the world, with education systems and with corporate, cultural and community organizations.  Sir Ken Robinson is the most watched speaker in TED’s history. His 2006 talk, “Do Schools Kill Creativity” has been viewed online over 40 million times and seen by an estimated 350 million people in 160 countries! The book is great and very timely because so many parents are deeply concerned about education which has become a minefield of politics and controversy.  It’s so difficult to know what  to look for in a school, and to know what we can do if we feel it isn’t right for our child,  With good schools oversubscribed and a panic to get the school of your choice depending on catchment areas, we can feel powerless which leads to huge stress and anxiety.

Ken dispels some myths and challenges that many of us might feel are set in stone. He has argued in the past that art and dance are just as important as geography and physics, and that ‘Imagination is the source of all human achievement’.  In our interview he pointed out that there are many wonderful teachers, but in many cases they are straitjacketed by the system which perpetuates way too many tests and the ‘one size must fit all’ approach.  He suggests we should look to Finland where they have a far superior education system, which revolves around ‘life skills’ and zero testing.

It’s an inspirational read, but if you don’t have children or grandchildren at this point, don’t pass Ken by, check out his New York Times best-selling book The Element, How finding your passion changes everything, – co-authored with Lou Aronica.  It doesn’t really matter what age you are, it’s never too late to find your passion and make sure you are doing what you love.
The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything

The Blurb says…The Element is the point at which natural talent meets personal passion. When people arrive at the Element, they feel most themselves, most inspired and achieve at their highest levels. With a wry sense of humor, and drawing on the stories of a wide range of artists, scientists, athletes, business leaders, academics, and many others, Ken Robinson shows why finding your Element is essential for all of us and explores the conditions that lead us to live lives that are filled with passion, confidence, and personal achievement.

He got a cool accolade too….

Offers life-altering insights about the discovery of your true best self.” – STEPHEN R. COVEY, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Its so true, we need to be in the flow, be in our element to feel fulfilled, if you have kids, help them to find their element, its not too late for you either – to be the best person you can be, love what you do!

If you have a business and want to attract clients and a tribe, make sure that you know what makes them tick,  and make sure they know about you.  Your vibe attracts your tribe remember so ensure that you are giving off the right energy – one of being ….in your element!

Surely that’s the recipe for well being

You, Your child and school by Ken Robinson is out now
You, Your Child and School

Are you going for it 100 per cent?

How committed are you to growing your brand? Getting recognition for your work? Finishing your book? Attracting the right clients and media attention?   Fully I’m guessing you will say.  I too consider myself a very ‘committed’ person, once I make a decision to do something I usually see it through…however I read a blog post recently on the Greatist website by Susie Moore, a British confidence expert who is based in the US, which gave me one of those AHA moments, and made me take a long hard look at myself.

Her post is all about committing wholeheartedly to something, she starts the blog by describing going out to dinner with a friend who quit sugar, if she teases her and says …want a bite of my dessert?, her friend says ‘No thanks’ with ease and indifference. Susie asks, is it hard for her to turn it down every time?  NO,  because she is fully committed.  Susie argues that its our ‘well meaning 90 per cent effort’ that is exhausting, it consumes energy without producing results, and we fall short of our potential

She quotes Jack Canfield, author of The Success Principles, who says  “99 percent is a b*tch. 100 percent is a breeze.”

I started to think about how this could relate to me, and I realized that there are areas in my life where I am 100 per cent committed.  I don’t use synthetic chemical skincare, beauty products and wherever possible (and husband and teenage kids not withstanding) I avoid chemical cleaning and laundry products.  I am committed to constantly researching great new products and services to blog about and I am totally committed to  my #changemaker clients – helping them become more visible in the media.

There’s other stuff too of course, but it got me thinking about my own goals.  I wrote a novel a couple of years ago, and despite having written five non fiction books including a Number One Amazon Best Seller Imperfectly Natural Woman, Imperfectly Natural Woman: Getting Life Right the Natural Way
I found myself floundering and nervous as to whether its any good and how to get it away.   If you had asked me a few weeks ago, Am I committed to getting my novel published? I’d have said, of course I want ti more than anything….sort of…. Why then have  I wasted a year without approaching a good literary agent or really making in-roads into publishing?  If I search my soul I know its fear, yep the inner critic doing its thing.   Ironically I bang on about this when I speak at events, I remind people who have a talent, a passion, an opportunity to make a difference, NOT to allow their inner critic to determine how small they stay, or how much they grow.

I often quote Julia Cameron the fabulous author of The Artists Way,The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity  I had the pleasure of working with her at a Hay House conference, and she told the audience of wannabee authors, to listen attentively and notice the inner voice when it tells you that you arent good enough, that you can’t possibly attract an agent or publishing deal, that you will never finish your manuscript…listen and the reply (inwardly probably best) ‘Thank you for sharing…now f**k off!’

I’ve been though phases over the last year to trying to get my book away, but not following up, I tried one agent (v big time) and was refused so instead of picking myself up and starting again, I allowed myself to wallow in rejection (bonkers right?  Didn’t JK Rowling have a load of rejections?  Julia Cameron herself had 42 rejections for her debut novel and then a publishing bidding war on the 43rd attempt)   I waited and waited and procrastinated about the edit, about  how much time I could commit to it, about getting started on my next one, (I have lots of ideas)  The truth is it has taken a lot of my time and energy ’90-percenting’ it, perhaps it will flow more easily if I finally give it 100 per cent of my attention.

Susie suggests we identify what needs 100 per cent of our attention, from a habit you need to quit altogether to a business goal, maybe even the need to declutter and detox from certain ‘friends;

Then we must put the effort in and commit.  Do what it takes and don’t look back, its tough, but in tbe long run easier than constantly thinking about the problem and agonising over it.  Then she recommends that we repeat the same process with the new priority, because once something is properly finished we have a sense of completion and feel ready for the next thing.

I am going to make a few changes, the truth is I wear a lot of hats, I can’t just do ‘one thing’ I know I know I know that’s advised but it just ain’t me, I can however decide which of my many ‘projects’ are taking too much of my mental energy without getting anywhere, then I will decide if they are really worth committing 100 per cent to, if not …out they go.

What are you currently 90 percenting?  if like me there are several things, take stock, choose what you really want for your life, your work your success and go for it 100 per cent, so that whether you work on it today, or tomorrow, or regularly is just not a variable.  You’re committed.  End of.

Check out Susie Moore’s  website and Susie if you read this, thanks for the kick up the butt!

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) – Be Prepared!

If you are a small business owner, coach, expert, entrepreneur, therapist et al you will I’m guessing have heard by now about the new regulations around GDPR.

There has been a host of scaremongering going on with people saying in hushed tones, did you know that the fines can be £20 million! What???

Don’t panic, I have it on good authority that both you and I are highly unlikely to be fined astronomical sums of money (or hopefully any money at all), but we do need to ensure that we are playing by the rules.

Some of it is confusing and does seem rather ambiguous though, I must confess, I have been given contradictory advice by colleagues (one which came via her lawyer) and I have been quoted in excess of 5k for a legal team to help me get my stuff in order. Ouch, I won’t be doing that! While I feel concerned and a bit wobbly about all of this, at the same time I feel as brand owners or sole traders we should embrace this and use it as a great reason to ‘cull’ those who are on our mailing lists by accident and connect with those that really want to engage with us.

Fortunately, I connected with Suzanne Dibble who is a small business law expert, formerly she was a business lawyer for the world’s largest law firm and knows her stuff. She saw lots of inconsistent advice being bandied around so realised she needed to address a few key issues such as…

What GDPR really says and how to comply:
– do you need a double opt-in post GDPR
– can marketers rely on the legitimate interest ground for processing
– what are the new conditions for consent to processing
– data transfers to the US e.g. if you are using Mailchimp, Aweber, Infusionsoft etc.
– how data subject rights are being enhanced
– what the new definition of sensitive data is and how to get consent to process this
– whether you need to get fresh consent from your email list
And much more…

Suzanne has put together a special GDPR Pack comprising:

Email for refreshing consent | GDPR compliant privacy policy | GDPR checklist including processing checklist | Data processing inventory | Legitimate Interests Assessment form | Data transfer checklist | Marketing checklist | Records retention policy | DPO checklist | Employer checklist | Employee privacy statement | Employee subject access request form | Response to employee subject access request | Processor agreement | Subject access record | Data breach record | Data breach checklist | DPIA form

As you know, if you read my blogs I don’t have affiliate links or commission, but for the purposes of transparency if you use this link I do get a kick-back, so if you do buy it – THANK YOU!

Let’s Make GDPR Into ‘Good Deeds Pay Rewards’…

Just one more thing, I’m sure that you, like me, have received some emails already from colleagues and contacts asking you to re-sign up to continue receiving their content. A few weeks ago before I was fully aware of the implications, I opened my inbox and found about 4 such emails, I remember thinking…’oh, yes I must do that, I do want to continue to be on that coach’s list, and yes I like getting the tips from that therapist’….and then I promptly went back to what I was doing and forgot.

I’ve since painstakingly found those requests and re-signed because I asked myself how I would feel if that was mine that got overlooked? I have a huge list and I suspect lots of people won’t stay but that’s fine, however those who do want to hear from me, I SO hope will take the time to just make the click straight away.

So, here’s my suggestion, as small business owners, influencers, et al we are trying to make a difference, sadly I suspect that enforcing these new laws won’t catch the spammers and those who aren’t authentic about their marketing, but like it or not we have to comply so let’s use it as an opportunity to support each other. Do your good deed, re-sign up to someone else now.

Remember someone else’s success is not your failure. Let’s change GDPR to Good Deeds Pay Rewards, after all… All ships rise in high tide!!!

P.S. When I send you my ‘please stay with us’ email …please do!!!

Can Hypnosis Help You Write Your Best-Selling Book?

‘I am enough; it’s a phrase we hear a lot about, but how many of us really feel that way?

I remember reading an article in a daily newspaper where ten high profile women wrote a letter to their bodies, it made for heart-breaking reading, one by one they criticised and attacked the parts of themselves they hated, barely managing to find even a measly moment of satisfaction as they eschewed everything from the size of their bottom to their unruly hair.

Over the years, as I have been a Hay House author I have become steeped in the ‘love yourself first’ theory, Louise herself was a staunch advocate of looking in a mirror, regularly (she kept a tiny one in her bra so she could whip it out at opportune moments) and saying…”I love you…xxx” (your name).

It doesn’t come easily to us, most of us have the inner critic berating us loudly in at least one ear, and in truth, if the words we said to ourselves were spoken out loud to a child, we’d be had up for abuse.
Of course, it’s not only about looks, we constantly run the stories of…’I’m not good enough, talented enough, successful enough, and confident enough’…

These limiting beliefs can massively impact on our wellbeing and our success, as we constantly reinforce to our subconscious mind that we are not ‘enough’ of whatever it is we feel we are lacking in. Recently I have had some disappointments in my career, nothing too terrible, but enough to leave me thinking…’I’m not enough.’ I’ve written a novel, and despite having written 5 books before, with two Amazon number one best sellers to my name, fiction is very different and my first attempt at securing the agent I wanted didn’t materialise. Instead of shaking myself off and trying again I literally ‘sat’ on my book for months and felt a bit sorry for myself. I made lots of jokes to the kids ‘I think I’ll go and eat worms’ when we went out for a coffee and snack, hubby would joke…Want worm pie? Oh, how we laughed, but actually this was reinforcing these negative beliefs deeply into my subconscious mind. I felt steeped in self-pity and lack of self-belief and I felt unable to shake myself out of it.

Enter into the frame Cat Raincock, a transformational hypnotherapist and coach. Cat has been there herself and got the T-shirt. As a new mum she felt overwhelmed, she realised she was at breaking point with negative self-talk and she went on a mission to transform her life. Cat made the commitment to herself to rewrite her past, visualise her future and each day she took daily action to achieve her goals. Cat now offers transformational hypnosis along with coaching. Cat explains that hypnosis unpicks the subconscious and gives the client the answers to their current emotional state i.e. anxious, angry, depressed. Her coaching then takes this new-found information and she applies it to their daily life so that they can consciously break the patterns.

I booked Cat for a 90-minute Skype session to have a look at my ‘confidence’ issues. It seemed a little odd, because clearly I am already a confident person, I am regularly on air speaking to 9 million people, I’m a regular on stage speaking in front of thousands, and I have no problem saying what I think!…but when it came to putting my novel out there and pitching to agents, something was holding me back. We did the session by Skype and started by discussing my situation.

I had to be very honest with Cat and admit that I am a funny mix. On one hand I wholeheartedly believe in manifesting your dreams, in magic, and being in alignment with energy flow, but on the other hand I am very realistic, and recognise that it could be that my novel is in fact a crock of s**t and that’s the reason I was turned down by my chosen literary agent! Cat answered this calmly; for starters, she asked me directly, “Do you honestly believe your book is good?” I had to acquiesce I really did. ‘Are you aware of the amount of rejections J.K Rowling had?’ She asked… Ah yes! I’d forgotten about that. I also remembered that the wonderful Julia Cameron, author of ‘The Artists Way’ who I interviewed for Hay House Radio, told me that her first novel was rejected 43 times! There was a publishers bidding war on the 44th attempt. Cat suggested that I was suffering from a classic case of lack of self-belief, it’s very common.

‘We all pick up limiting self-beliefs in our early childhood. Children are naturally narcissistic and when they feel unloved, not worthy, not enough, they turn it on themselves and believe it’s because of them and that they aren’t loveable, when in fact it’s simply the parent who is preoccupied, addicted and doesn’t feel enough. We take these beliefs through to adulthood until they are healed’

Cat began the hypnosis part of the session by ‘counting me down’ into a meditative state. Despite being in my home office, and on the camera via Skype, I did feel relaxed, she has an extremely soothing voice! She ‘took me back’ to various childhood memories of times when I didn’t feel ‘enough’ and asked me to say how I felt. It was quite eye-opening, after a few revelations it became very clear that I had – like most people, taken a bunch of knocks in childhood, been unfairly treated by teachers, been at the mercy of well-meaning parents, failed at certain tests and exams that had been important to me, been let down in relationships, there was in fact a plethora of ‘not enough’s’ rattling around my sub conscious mind.

If you’re thinking “I could never be hypnotised” there’s no need to worry, you are ‘conscious’ throughout, but it’s surprisingly relaxing and definitely enlightening as Cat works to free you from judgement, release you from the clutches of the inner critic, and as her words embedded into my subconscious mind I found myself feeling more self-belief, and feeling….enough.

Cat encourages you to embrace the feeling of alignment within your body, to embed those feelings of self-confidence and self-worth into your subconscious mind. She pointed out that when you feel and know you are ‘enough’ it radiates out from you and others start to believe in you too.

A week after our session, I am still listening daily to the recording Cat made exclusively for me, it’s so helpful to put that on, to reinforce the beliefs into the subconscious, and I am feeling a bit better. I feel closer to my dreams, I feel a sense of excitement about going after them, and if I fail to attract the perfect agent and publisher …because just like JK Rowling it’s likely for the first few attempts ….then I know it’s because they weren’t the right connections for me, and I will carry on. If I’m rejected I will see ‘NO’ as n for next and o for opportunity, and I look forward to the Next Opportunity.

Cat is practical though too, it isn’t all floating around being ‘woo woo’, she states the importance of putting the work in. Cat believes it’s important to ‘take action every day towards your goals, because the act of beginning starts the flow of ideas, it’s just that most of us procrastinate…

Julia Cameron

Julia Cameron – The Artist’s Way

As Cat reminds us, (and this will resonate with lots of you), If your goal is to write a book, remember its one sentence at a time, write for 15 mins if that’s all you have. Julia Cameron says, ‘steal time’…don’t buy into that concept of ‘I must go away on a long holiday to write my book’ she says if you have a ten-minute bus ride, write a few sentences, if you’re in a waiting room, grab your notebook and knock out a paragraph or two.

Whether you want to gain more confidence, start your business, or even want help with healing a condition, Cat is a remarkable practitioner. I’m definitely feeling stronger, no more ‘worms’ on the menu, I’ve got my mojo back and I am doing a bit every day, whether that be researching agents, publishers or re-editing my work. Watch this space – literary fiction chick lit world…I Am Enough…. best seller here  I come!

Oh and in the cafe…Mine’s a coconut flat white…hold on the worm pie…

Been Booked to Talk About Your Book / Work on TV / Radio?

…that’s just the start!

I was reminded yet again recently of why I do the work I do. As many of you know I wrote my first book ‘Imperfectly Natural Woman’ 11 years ago. I had written it because a publisher came to me and asked if I’d considered writing it, she had heard me speaking on the radio about natural health and wellbeing and alternative stuff, everything from eco laundry balls, through to organic skincare, fermented foods, raw cacao and reducing plastics (yes, I was seriously ahead of my time!).

The book was my life’s work, it came out just after the birth of my fourth child, and it was literally like having a fifth baby. When it didn’t rate – anywhere, when it wasn’t on the shelves in ANY stores, when no journalists were interested in the press release my publisher sent out – I was gutted. Furious actually, and beyond frustrated. I was also determined that this stuff I was sharing would be heard – somehow. I took matters into my own hands and started hustling, I found that journalists and producers are usually happy to hear from an author directly, even if you have invested in PR, and the turning point came when I was invited onto what was then the drive time show on BBC Radio 2. It was with Johnny Walker, he had recently come through his own health challenge and was very open to hearing me wax lyrical about everything from superfoods, through cleaning the house without chemicals, EMF protection, natural skincare, even eco sanitary ware!

The phones went mad, the reaction was great, I came away buzzing and went to sleep a happy bunny feeling proud that I’d got my message across and hopefully inspired a few more people to try a few holistic approaches, albeit ‘imperfectly’.

I couldn’t believe when the following morning, my publisher rang me at 7am to tell me the book had gone to Number One on Amazon best sellers overnight knocking ‘The Da Vinci Code’ off the top spot! Suddenly the branches of Waterstones and other stores (yes there were more back then) wanted to order in hundreds of copies of the book, (the publisher had sold out and needed to order an emergency print run) …suddenly every journo and producer in town wanted me to talk about the book. Fortunately, I have been in the media for years so I knew how to attract and maximise opportunities but I surely recognised the importance of making the most of media opportunities.

As time went on I became more aware of other authors promoting their books, and experts promoting their work and just how powerful being able to articulate your message really is.

There was one occasion when we interviewed a hypnotherapist who had written a book, their publisher had managed to get them the slot, on mainstream radio, speaking to nine million people, I was thrilled because I love being part of bringing this stuff to the general public, sadly the hypnotherapist and author, who was no doubt a fabulous therapist and excellent author, was a shockingly bad interviewee, he/ she (not saying!) had done zero preparation, was incredibly nervous (that’s understandable) and hadn’t got clarity on their key messages. Even the most basic questions floored them. It was painful.

Fortunately for us, we were pre-recording this interview so it was dropped. Dropped! ….and the potential had been there to sell a cool 35k books…. ouch.

A similar thing happened a few years later and it was at this point that I started to do the work I do now, coaching and inspiring everyone to recognise that ‘You’ are the brand, not your book, your product or service, it’s YOU we want to connect with, and unless you have clarity on your USP, your story, which bits of your work you want to talk about – it’s difficult to connect and to ‘like, know and trust’ you. Being a great interviewee is not rocket science. These are skills that can be learned. You can fake it till you make it (or till you become it).

On one occasion a new author came in and blew it from the off, literally putting her head in her hands after we asked the first question and saying Oh s**t….Thank the Lord that was pre-recorded.

We ended up working together and that author is now regularly on TV and Radio

Surprisingly despite the rise and rise of the key influencer and confident Instagrammer, I had another experience recently where I was shocked to see that an author, who will of course again be nameless, came in to our studio totally unprepared. He / she couldn’t answer even the most basic background question without stumbling and laughing, saying, thank goodness this is a pre-record! Thank goodness indeed. Now with some skilled editing that interview ended up sounding great, but my question is, what was the author doing, not bothering to invest in that opportunity? Why hadn’t they taken the time to think through what they might be asked? To decide what the key points they wanted to get across were, whether there were aspects of the book or their own story they wanted to flag up? Even worse this particular author was accompanied by a press officer from the publishing house whose job it was surely to ensure that their authors were going to do a good job of ‘selling’ the book.

Not everyone is naturally confident speaking in public or in an interview situation. Not everyone finds it easy to form clear and concise statements about their own work. Not all brand owners find it easy to craft their mission statement or elevator pitch. But all of this is possible, and you don’t have to be an excellent ‘orator’ to come across well in an interview, you just have to be authentic, and enthusiastic.

The confidence comes from knowing you are prepared, from pre-empting what the tricky questions might be, and knowing exactly how you will answer them. Start with my post on six classic interview questions you must ask yourself about your brand

Even worse than being nervous while being interviewed, is to be disinterested, and yes, we have interviewed authors who couldn’t really be bothered, and trust me if you sound bored talking about your book you won’t be inspiring people to go and buy it! Nothing is worse than hearing someone who doesn’t sound enthusiastic. Ultimately people do business with those they like know and trust, and you will come across as trustable and likable if you share your story, your information, with passion and authenticity.

Valentine Self-Love Tips From Some of My Experts

Love is in the air! It certainly will be next week when the commercial side of Valentines Day will go into overdrive. True love is a splendid thing and so is self-love, not to confused with arrogance or self-absorption, you may wonder what self-love has to do with Media and PR?….So many people can often be held back from growing their business due to lack of self-esteem and self-love. Here’s a range of insight and tips from my #changemakers…

Let’s start with some tips and wisdom from Cat Raincock who is a woman who has changed her life, from feeling totally overwhelmed, neglected and unhappy, to now living the life she dreamt of as a kid. Cat can help you prioritize yourself and guide you to transform into the best version of you! She suggests the following:

Cat-photo-

We hear the term self-love all the time and I am a great believer in it. To learn to love yourself is the greatest empowerment there is but it is such a blanket term that it can be confusing about exactly what we need to do to self-love. That’s why I talk mostly about self-care as it is the act of self-love. When we self-love, we nourish ourselves on an emotional, spiritual and physical level and it’s the commitment we all need to make to ourselves.

Self-care is free, it’s immediate and it’s available to you! Start today, it is greatest gift you can give yourself this year – why not start this Valentine’s Day.

What constitutes self-care? Stop saying ‘yes’ when you mean ‘no’, accepting invitations to things you ‘should’ go to rather than you ‘want’ to go to, burning candles at both ends, consuming toxic food, taking on more than you can manage because you won’t delegate.

Start, taking a bath and having some peace and quiet to rest your mind, cancel plans because you need to rest, eating clean nourishing food, do exercise you love, tuning in to yourself, meditating or doing yoga – all of these help to rebalance and reset your system.

Cai Graham Parenting Expert suggests learning the art of saying ‘No’ and putting yourself first, this one is especially for mums.

amazon-cai-graham

We are ALL busy people – and there are very few of us who get the balance ‘just right’. However, what I am finding is that women, and in particular Mums, are the worst offenders. Whether it’s our upbringing, society, or just plain old Mother Nature (my guess is that it’s a combination of all three), we are programmed to Nurture … our children, our partners, our friends and family, our colleagues … but we forget about ourselves.

We end up ‘running on empty’ feeling frazzled and exhausted and often even a little bit resentful – and as a result are unable to give of our best to anybody. So, I encourage you to look after yourself a bit more, be kinder to yourself and put yourself back on your to-do-list. Dare I say it … put yourself first for a change. Do what makes you SHINE: Go to the gym, stop working so late, meet up with friends, learn to say No – whatever works for you. It’s certainly not selfish – your family and friends will thank you for it!

Judith Quinn, is a public speaking and vocal confidence specialist, and sound healer, and she says:

Judith Quin Big Smile

It is vital to remember the things that we love about ourselves because what we focus on, we create more of. Surely, we all want to create more love?

“I hate my thighs.” “I hate my teeth.” “I hate the sound of my voice.” “I hate my….”

How many times a day or week do you say you HATE something about yourself? “STOP! Now!”

Words have their own power and energy because they have their own physical sound vibration. Take a look at the work of Dr.Emoto and the incredible experiments he did on the shape and energy of words in water crystals. If even a written word can create either distorted (Hate) or beautiful (Love) shapes in water, imagine what you are doing to the water that makes up most of your body, every time you say or think you hate something about yourself. Instead try finding things to love, or the next time you say something derogatory, counteract and balance it by saying out loud three things you love about yourself. You will create an energy that is higher vibration. You will carry yourself differently. You will sound different in your tone of voice. You will create more love. So always choose your words wisely when speaking to, or about, both yourself and others; the words you use help shape the energy of the space you’re in.

Liz Hancock helps struggling and overwhelmed entrepreneurs, coaches, therapists and practitioners charge their worth and feel fabulous about it! She says:

Liz 2

I used to think loving yourself was vain and self-indulgent. I now know it’s the complete opposite. It’s a SELFLESS act! Why? Because it makes you a MUCH NICER, KINDER, BETTER person! Friend, Wife, Mother, Daughter, Sister, Aunty, Employer, person that someone has to interact with on the roads, in the carpark, the supermarket etc! Self-love is NOT always putting your own feelings and annoyances before anyone else or thinking you’re better than anyone else. It’s about making time for yourself – to nurture your own health and wellbeing, whatever that means to you.

For me, self-love is setting myself up calmly and lovingly for the day ahead. Not beating myself up if I’m slower than usual, practising gratitude or praying. It’s ensuring that I have healthy food in the house and allowing myself to have chocolate if I really want it! It’s not allowing others to upset me, to calmly address something if it needs to be addressed and not having it eat away at you. It’s about having boundaries and saying if something doesn’t work for you. It’s letting go of total control and allowing myself to USE the tools I have at my fingertips to calm me when I’m stressed.

Self-love is not self-indulgent, selfish or vain. Self-love is essential to the care and nurturing of not just ourselves, but our loved ones and humanity as a whole too! Love Yourself first, and you can love others a whole lot more!

Nadia Smith, author of “How did I get These?”, monthly columnist for the online Healing Energy Magazine, and Founder of True To Our Roots Qi Gong says this about Self-Love:

Nadia

“Being willing to love ourselves means that we are greeting life with acceptance rather than resistance. By resisting we see life through the fog of our pre-conditioned beliefs, opinions and a veil of mind-stuff, keeping life complicated and painful.” (Learning to Love Yourself” by Gay Hendricks.).

Dropping resistance means reconnecting with our true self and really feeling alive, it means that rather than paddling upstream we turn our canoe and start flowing downstream with the current.

When we feel sad, angry, worried, anxious or fearful it is best to allow these emotions to emerge from the depth of our being and honour them rather than suppress them, otherwise they become medical conditions. This is something we address in True To Our Roots Qi Gong as in Traditional Chinese Medicine our internal organs are very much the home of our emotions. Learning to connect with them and allowing the expression of these feelings to emerge helps us to heal and nurture ourselves at a deep level.

Becoming our own detective as to why we have trapped emotions and their origins, could be a clarifying exercise in helping remove the resistance of loving ourselves, for example what happened to our mothers as far back as when we were unborn, which could have affected our emotional state, or how we were treated and taught during childhood, adolescence and adult life. All circumstances which could be at the root of us feeling unlovable, unworthy, angry, sad or fearful.

Anita Moorjani (author of “Dying to be Me.”) suggests we treat ourselves as if we were our own best friend, instead of bullying and berating ourselves – after all we would never speak to a friend the way we talk to or about ourselves?

According to Anita “We don’t have to earn love – it is our birth right.”

Here are some tips from her second book, “What if this is Heaven?”

Questions to ask yourself.

  • – How can I love myself more?
  • – What would I be doing right now if I did love myself?
  • – How can I support myself more through whatever challenge I’m facing?
  • – How can I best be an example to youngsters around me in showing them the importance of self-love?

Once you begin to make choices which are fun to you rather than worrying about what others think of you, you stop feeling guilty when things go well for you, you accept compliments graciously, and you learn the art of saying “no”, then you know that you are heading in the direction of least resistance and that of self-love.

Why We Do What We Do!

‘Over the years I have worked with so many therapists and coaches who have ‘money issues’ they find it hard to charge the right price for the amazing work they do and when they really acknowledge it, there are often deep rooted limiting beliefs around money. I’ve definitely been guilty of it, happily spending money on my kids but even if I have enough, eschewing any little treats for myself. You will have come across the ‘I can make you a millionaire’ type programmes online, I suggest they can’t and you shouldn’t buy in! Liz Hancock is different, she has been there, done it, got the T shirt, she is authentic and is encouraging you as a holistic expert to change your mindset. She has created the 50k formula programme – far more realistic, to get you fired up to earning 50 and beyond in 12 months

Therapists, coaches, practitioners – why do we do what we do?

Because we LOVE it! It makes us feel great knowing we are helping and having an impact on others – life changing and even life saving results in many cases.

We wish we could reach more people and have a greater impact – not for the glory or recognition, just because we love to help and serve people. It makes us re-examine what’s important in life. We can shun the material and money driven excesses we are surrounded by and feel like we’ve achieved true enlightenment and peace – because we’ve done that for ourselves and so many of the people we’ve helped!

It’s a euphoric place to be! But when you add back in money worries, real concerns over paying the bills, getting by without scrimping and saving, not being able to invest in the next course to add the next string to our bow, not being able to buy new clothes if we want to, not just because we really, really need to! It can be exhausting, scary and downright miserable. It takes us out of that euphoric place almost as soon as our last client has said goodbye.

Yes marketing can help – but that can be expensive, and we’ve all heard about these ‘coaches’ that can get you to £10k months and £100k years within 6 months. If we dare to dream and trust in them, we’re more often than not left sorely disappointed at them and then made to feel it’s our own fault – because we didn’t take the action or ‘follow the coaching.’ Either that or we don’t even try because it just seems so far out of reach, so unrealistic.

But what if there was a way to calm all the noise. To shut off the sound of the bills landing heavily through your letter box, to silence the screams of ‘I just haven’t got the money, when will I EVER have the money?’

I believe there is, because this is what I’ve managed to do firstly for myself, then for so many of my clients. I’ve called my new Money Mindset programme, ‘The £50k Mindset Mentoring Programme’ because I’m so fed up of hearing the stories of so many therapists, practitioners and heart-centred coaches get burnt and waste money on those £100k programmes! Truth is, £50k can be a life changing income level – it can allow you to give up your day job, be independent, pay the bills and just enjoy life a bit – a lot MORE than you do currently. The other truth is, with a little guidance and help, it can easily feel doable and possible. Get yourself into that place of possibility and you’re half way there. But HOW do you do that?! I have 12 core processes I take my clients through, each carefully designed to address the multiple aspects of how we think about money, success, failure and how deserving you are of a decent income doing what you love.

I can honestly say, hand on heart – the impact of doing this work has saved me from a lifetime of paranoia, doubt, limitation and self sabotage. Always having to do things the ‘hard way.’ Never staying in that magical place of ‘ease and flow.’ But it IS possible – if I’ve done it anyone can. I used to think of myself as broken. Now I know I am mended! And it’s my mission to mend a whole load more of people.
